What Is a Blackhead?

While blackheads are just one type of symptom you can experience with acne, they can be problematic for many people who can’t seem to get rid of them. The dark color gives the impression of “dirty” skin, and may lead to the affected individual washing and scrubbing their skin repeatedly in an attempt to get it “deep down clean.” But before you declare war on your skin, you first need to answer the question, “What is a blackhead?” and learn what it takes to get rid of them without damaging your skin.
Blackheads are tiny black spots that are caused when the pore becomes blocked. They are considered the first stage of acne and will usually progress to more severe breakouts if not treated. Once bacteria are inside the pore, or follicle, inflammation occurs and causes a pimple. Blackheads usually occur in teens during puberty due to an increase in hormone levels, particularly that of testosterone.
Although testosterone is the “male hormone,” it is also found in girls, only to a lesser extent. Testosterone releases DHT, a hormone that overstimulates sebaceous glands and causes too much sebum, or oil, to be produced. When this happens, the pore is filled with oil which sticks to dead skin cells and other debris. If there is no opening at the surface of the blocked pore, a whitehead forms and the sebum is visible. However, when there is an opening, the exposure to the air causes melanin in the sebum to turn dark, creating a blackhead.
A pore cleansing tool is a much more effective way to remove sebum from the clogged pores than scrubbing. However, if the amount of sebum being produced is not reduced, more blackheads and whiteheads will develop, probably leading to more severe acne over time. Choosing the right product will help you eliminate the blackheads in your skin and prevent more from developing in the future.
